Yes, You Really Can Be a Hero

What is a hero, and why would you even want to be one? Let me reveal to you the great SECRET to changing your life. But first, let’s back up a step. If you are intrigued, or even just a little bit interested, in the idea of becoming a hero, you must not feel like a hero now. Why is that?

What is it about your life that makes you feel less than heroic? Do you feel pushed around by bullies, at home or at work? Do you find your most important decisions being made by others, or to make someone else happy? Are you alone? Lonely? Do you feel unloved or unlovable? Do you eat too much, drink too much, smoke too much or rely on drugs? Do you feel weak, incapable of achieving your goals? Or, worse, do you feel incapable even of conceiving goals for yourself? Let me ask you this: what is the opposite of a hero? That’s right: A Victim! Whenever you allow others to dictate your life, you become a victim. Whenever you stifle your dreams, or don’t even dare to have dreams, you become a victim. When you stop taking chances because you are afraid of the consequences, you become a victim. Whenever you succumb to addiction, you become a victim.

And what do victims do? They SUFFER.

But maybe you’ve tried to do something about it. Maybe you’ve tried counselling or dating services or weight-loss programmes or self-help books, and maybe they’ve helped, for awhile. But then you found yourself falling into old patterns, and drifting back to your role of victim. It doesn’t have to be like that. It is possible to shake off the chains that hold you down, to burst through the walls of your prison, to be free, to fly! It is entirely possible – no matter how trapped you may feel now – to release the hero that lies dormant in all of us, and I’m going to tell you how.

I wrote Be the Hero in the Movie of Your Life because I had seen it all before: the self-help books and seminars that temporarily inspire, but inevitably let you down; the life-coaches who make you feel good while you’re in the room, but whose strategies are too complicated, too far removed from normal human behaviour to be sustainable. Let’s face it: if changing your life were easy, wouldn’t everyone do it?

But it is! I wrote this book because I believed that self-help should be based upon a clear understanding of what is causing our pain in the first place. The SECRET to changing your life lies in identifying the source of your sadness, loneliness, longing, fear and pain. That source? STORIES. Yes, the stories we tell ourselves about who we are in a family, how valuable we are as people, what we are capable of, whether we can succeed, what we should be doing in our lives …. All these are stories fed to us from outside ourselves. You believe the stories you are told, because it is human nature to do so, and you’ve made them a part of who you are – telling yourself the same old stories over and over again. Stories of failure, stories of loss, stories of sorrow, weakness and fear.

Yes, you can be a hero.
